Gudi Padwa  Gudi Padwa, which marks the beginning of the new year for Maharashtrians, was celebrated with much pomp and fanfare in the city on Monday. Men and women dressed in saffron turbans and navvari (nine-yard ) saris danced to the beats of the lezim , dhol and cymbals, while the streets were decorated with colourful rangolis. Gudi Padwa, also known as Ugadi, is celebrated on the first day of the Hindu month of Chaitra, which, according to the Gregorian calendar would fall sometime at the end of March and the beginning of April. This festival is supposed to mark the beginning of 'Vasant' or spring. The whole of Maharashtra celebrates the New Year on Gudi Padwa every year. It is celebrated on the first day of the Chaitra month according to the Hindu calendar. Bhandup Pumping Station Bhandup Pumping Station is a relatively unknown place to a lot of people and is not as famous as say SGNP. But it is easily accessible for both Mumbaikars as well as out of towners. If you go by local train Nahur is the nearest local train station from which you can easily get a bus or auto rickshaw to take you to the Pumping Station. If you are driving then (from the Mumbai side heading to Thane) take a U-turn under the Airoli flyover and look for a small turn to the left. This is a narrow but tarred road and you can drive on this road close up to the lake. You can then park and do the rest of the trek on foot. This photo walk is for whom? The largest Ganesh statues, on display to the public, are usually immersed on Anant Chaturdasi - 11 days after the first day of the Ganesh festival. Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day Hindu festival celebrated to honor the God Ganesha's birthday. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Ganesha is known by 108 different names and is the Lord of arts and sciences and the deva of wisdom. He is honored at the start of rituals and ceremonies as he's considered the God of beginnings. He's widely and dearly referred to as Ganapati or Vinayaka.  The festival begins on Shukla Chaturthi which is the fourth day of the waxing moon period and ends on the 14th day of the waxing moon period known as Anant Chaturdashi. It is the very less traveled route of SGNP. This place is full of birds, reptiles, insects, and people who love being around nature. Chinchpokli & Parel Ganesh Idol Workshop The colorful Mumbai Ganesh idols, which are displayed all over the city during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival, are an awe-inspiring sight. It's natural to wonder about how they're made and the amount of work that's gone into creating them. If you're interested in finding out, it's possible to see the statues being crafted.  The skill is handed down from generation to generation, plus many migrants also come to Mumbai to help in the labor intensive process. It gets underway around three months before the festival takes place. Maharashtra Nature Park Located on the southern bank of Mithi river, and at Bandra-Sion Link Road, the Mahim Nature Park lie at Mahim, close to Mumbai, the commercial capital of India. Though the nature park is near Dharavi, which is said to be the largest slum of Asia, yet the nature park contains its natural beauty in its most pristine way, and have become a favorable escape from pollution-ridden city life of Mumbai. Said to be the Green Lung of Mumbai, the Mahim Nature Park provides Mumbaikar a very pleasant escape from the pollution-ridden life of the city. Being fine abode to several species of flora and fauna, the park is visited mostly by nature lovers. Beyond counting approx 200 species of trees, the park has 38 species of butterflies and 80 species of birds.
