Bandhavgarh was declared a national park in 1968, with an area of 105 km2. The buffer is spread over the forest divisions of Umaria and Katni and totals 820 km2. The park derives its name from the most prominent hillock of the area, which was said to be given by Hindu Lord Rama to his brother Lakshmana to keep a watch on Lanka (Ceylon). Velas Turtle Festival 2019 Sahyadri Nisarga Mitra, in joint collaboration with the Forest Department, Ratnagiri, Kasav Mitra Mandal Velas, and the Velas Gram Panchayat is organizing Turtle Festival. The event will be held until the emergence of hatchlings continues. The erratic climatic conditions, including the late onset of winter, have made it difficult to predict the exact dates on which the turtle hatchlings will emerge. Hence, tourists should check the website or the facebook page to get the latest updates on the dates of emergence before visiting. The sites will be updated twice daily. TATR is created by amalgamating Tadoba National Park & Andhari Wildlife Sanctuary. The total area under the Project Tiger is 1727.6 sq.km with core area being 625. 82 sq.km and the rest 1101.78 sq.km constitute the buffer zone. The present-day Kanha area was divided into two sanctuaries, Hallon and Banjar, of 250 and 300 km2 respectively. Kanha National Park was created on 1 June 1955 and in 1973 was made the Kanha Tiger Reserve. Today it stretches over an area of 940 km2 in the two districts Mandla and Balaghat. Ganesh Chaturthi is a ten-day Hindu festival celebrated to honor the God Ganesha's birthday. He is the younger son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
