Bhandup Pumping Station Bhandup Pumping Station is a relatively unknown place to a lot of people and is not as famous as say SGNP. But it is easily accessible for both Mumbaikars as well as out of towners. If you go by local train Nahur is the nearest local train station from which you can easily get a bus or auto rickshaw to take you to the Pumping Station. If you are driving then (from the Mumbai side heading to Thane) take a U-turn under the Airoli flyover and look for a small turn to the left. This is a narrow but tarred road and you can drive on this road close up to the lake. You can then park and do the rest of the trek on foot. This photo walk is for whom? Elephanta Caves The Elephanta Caves, taluka Uran, district Raigad is located on island hills about 11 km north-east of the Apollo Bandar, Mumbai and 7 km from the shore of the mainland, approximately covering an area of 7 km in circumference. The island is named after a colossal elephant found in the island, which is popularly known as ‘Gharapuri’. At present, the statue of elephant is housed at Jijamata Garden in Mumbai. In ancient period, the place is variously identified as Puri which is mentioned in the Aihole inscription of Pulakesin II. It seems, different dynasties held their sway over this island, namely, the Konkan-Mauryas, Trikutakas, Chalukyas of Badami, Silaharas, Rashtrakutas, Kalyani Chalukyas, Yadavas of Deogiri, Muslim rulers of Ahmedabad and then by the Portuguese. Durgadi Fort Durgadi is a derived from union of two Marathi words Durga (A Hindu Goddess) and Gaad (Which means 'Fort' in Marathi language). Durgadi Fort is Kalyan city's most adored historical monument, a sacred worshiping place and even a recreation spot for many Kalyankars. Durgadi Fort also called as Durgadi Killa was constructed during Shivaji's Era in honour of hindu deity Mata Durga. Shivaji Maharaj captured Kalyan and Bhiwandi from Adilshah on 24th October 1654. He built a fort near the creek as a support to Kalyan and used it as a dock to manufacture ships. It is said that wealth was found during excavation for the fort foundation. Since it was due Goddess Durga’s blessings, the fort was named “Durgadi”. There were 340 Portuguese workers employed to build the fort. Durgadi was captured by Moghul Sardar Hasan Ali Khan in 1682. Yeoor is a location in Thane district in Maharashtra, India that lies in the Sanjay Gandhi National Park. It is known for its panthers and wildlife. Yeoor Hills (or also known as Mama Bhanja Hills) is a hill station of Thanaites. This naturally beautiful and pollution free area attracts lot of people. It is an unspoiled area, carpeted by natural foliage and fauna. Yeoor Hills is home to about 78 known species of birds and about 12 different species of animals. Vasai Fort, also called Bassein Fort, lies about 48 kms north of Mumbai just across the Ulhas River.  The fort in the old city was the headquarter of the Portuguese in the north, next in importance to Goa.  The coastal land-fort of Vasai was surrounded by sea on three sides and to the landside it had a moat which was filled by sea-water.  Its 4.5kms long strong stone wall had 11 bastions.  The fort had two gates – the westward land-gate.  There was also a small citadel in the fort.  Well – equipped with water-tanks, store-houses, armoury, etc., the fort also had fields for growing grains and vegetables.  All the old structures inside the wall are now in ruins.
